1. I hit 32 weeks yesterday — hooray!
This is the part of the pregnancy when you look like you should be having the baby maybe any day, and people get a surprised look on their faces when you say you still have two months to go. Eight weeks doesn’t sound like nearly as much as saying your due date is “April 23″ which sounds very far away.
I do the exact same thing when I ask a pregnant person about her due date is it’s not within four weeks. The end is just a bit of a haul.
2. We have had sickness here all week and I’m amazed at how something as slight as a mild fever and runny nose can affect so much. I’ve had someone home sick every day this week and Henry has been incredibly out-of-sorts in general. It’s just a “one-foot-in-front-of-the-other” few days.
3. On tap for this afternoon: haircuts! But don’t tell the boys. Paul and I have been eyeing them, waiting to see how far we can push it out between trips to the barber. I was wanting to go as long as possible to get close to Easter, but the time is now. “Have you noticed that Ethan looks a little like Sideshow Bob?,” Paul asked the other day.
The best part is each of the boys has his own particular style of overgrown hair. Some have hair that grows up and out, others that just goes directly down. I was kind of waiting to see if the school would send a note home because hair past eyebrows is not code, but my boys who suffer with the long, straight bangs must do a good job of swooping them to the side during the day.
4. A bunch of time was spent this week trying to help my oldest finesse his science project. The boy and his project partners’ original idea included “blowing up rocks,” which should surprise no one. But I wasn’t really able to nail down a thesis or even figure out what they were hoping to see, other than rocks exploding (which, yes I agree is totally cool). So after lots of back and forth we all agreed on something that isn’t quite as glamorous but should yield solid scientific findings one way or the other.
5. Augie has his First Penance next Saturday and I’m excited for him. I think he’s a bit more nervous but not nearly as cavalier as his older brother was a few years ago when that boy told me he didn’t really have any sins as he was “pretty mild-mannered.” The best part of that story (which I know I tell you from time to time) is that this particular boy isn’t really mild-mannered at all!
6. Henry and his older, infirm brother are in the front room watching ancient episodes of The Little Rascals. Henry is imitating Alfalfa singing. It’s hilarious.
7. I guess I should be glad none of the boys get Alfalfa’s hair-do when they are overgrown. Thank Heaven for small favors.

I was surprisingly pleasant for almost all of my pregnancy (which surprised me and my husband). Until the last month, that is, when I got comments like "You're still here?" "You look like you're having twins." "You're big!" "Are you still pregnant?" and "Haven't had that baby yet?" Most of these were from women who have had babies, so they should have known better. None were from men. And all had painfully obvious answers. Am I still enormous? Then yes, I'm still pregnant. Am I in the room? Then yes, I'm still here. It was all I could do not to revert back to my sarcastic, cutting high school days and give those old ladies a piece of my mind. And I'm their pastor's wife.
Christopher had his First Penance a couple of weeks ago. He told me beforehand that he was excited, "because it's a sacrament, but you don't have to get dressed up."
Hope these last eight weeks fly by in a whirlwind of nesting and glee!
Five boys, how fun! Found your blog via the Quick Takes – and I'll be back! I have 4 boys, and can see already I will totally jive with what you're doing here – God bless you!
I love coming to your blog. I am pregnant with my 3rd boy and I always get the you have 3 months to go thing.. then they say "wow that's gonna be a BIGGGG baby" I love that, but I take comfort in the fact that they have all been normal size when the day finally arrives. I also have the hair problem… My two boys have TOTALLY opposite hair, but either way it is way too long and grows way too fast. Anyway, thanks for the laugh!!! Hope the next few weeks go by smoothly for you!!!
We save a lots of time/driving and a TON of money by cutting our 3 boys' hair at home. It is not that hard, you just have to go slow at first, and some types are a bit more challenging. We even give out lollipops when it is over!
Mild-mannered….hilarious. I'm going to use that one too.
Oh my goodness, I love your blog! I really needed this today. Thank you for your humility, and humor! Blessings- Heather
Oh my goodness! April 23!? That is my littlest's birthday. Plus you and I have sons with the same birthday/age, too! April 23 is believed to also be Shakespeare's b-day.
I think you should post before and after pics of the boys after the haircuts are all done. They are all so cute. Even though I know most are old enough to get really mad when you call them "cute."
