Quick Takes, Really Long Edition

1. So I was on the radio this morning! I did The Son Rise morning show, and I think I did okay — didn’t stumble over too many words. Not bad considering I was up and talking to the very energetic Brian Patrick at an hour that I haven’t seen since before the time change. Thanks for having me on the show, guys!

2. On Tuesday, April 6 I will be on The Catholics Next Door (on XM and Sirius Radio). I have XM radio in my car, so I might drive around and pick up a few of my friends to be a “live audience” for me. Let me know if you want to get in on the action. Par-tee!

3. Many thanks to Sarah at Clover Lane for mentioning my book today! You are so sweet. Welcome, Clover Lane readers!

Also, thanks to Jen at Conversion Diary – who talks about enjoying the book and also about the blurb she wrote for the back cover. She did a fantastic job on that (really did bring a tear to my eye!). I still need to send her a little thank you gift — maybe some scorpion repellent?

4. In her Quick Takes today, Jen talks about having a claim to fame, and here is mine: my dad was in a famous Rock ‘n Roll band in the late 60s and early 70s (basically until I was born). He was the drummer for Keith (the band was called The Wild Kingdom), who recorded the smash-hit 98.6.

When I was in high school I worked as a “front-end associate” for Eckerd Drug Store and this song came on the Muzak channel. “That’s my dad,” I told whoever would listen. Very cool moment.

Of course, the best part of the whole story is that while this is a big part of where my dad has been, he doesn’t cling to it in a way that has ever made us feel like he misses that life or that being a husband and father (and now grandfather) is in any way second-rate to the life he had “on the road.” In fact, my dad has always made it clear that while he enjoyed those years of rock-n-roll, he sees God’s merciful hand in eventually getting him out of that scene and blessing him with his amazing wife and children — and a great career. My dad was one of the founders of the private school my boys now attend and I could not be more grateful for that part of his life work.

To me, this is a best-of-both-worlds situation — appreciate the past for what it’s worth, but don’t try to set up camp there.

5. Just an update on the book — it moved to the Number 5 spot in one category today and (OHMYGOSH I JUST CHECKED) NUMBER THREE in Motherhood books! Thank you all SO MUCH for your support, for the kind emails and comments. You are all so good to me!

6. Here’s an obligatory picture, only because I don’t know if I’ll be feeling so inclined next week. Can I get any bigger? Don’t answer that.

7. I overheard two of the boys talking in the bathroom the other day.

“Shiny hair is a superpower?” said Charlie in disbelief.

I walked in to find Elliott holding a small bottle of a travel-size conditioner.

“What are you talking about,” I asked.

“Amaranth,” he read to me, “was a seed cultivated by Aztecs for its supernatural powers. Helps add luster and shine to hair.”

The two boys looked at each other like that was the craziest thing they’d ever heard. Then they proceeded to apply a little more conditioner, just in case.

Love number 7 — sooo funny! Now if they'd only asked you about it first you could assured them that yes, shiny hair (particularly shiny pregnancy hair), is most definitely a super power!

  5. Erin says:

Totally unrelated…but I LOVE the dresser behind you.

  6. Amy Parris says:

What time are you on the radio Tuesday? I could use a traveling party:)

Totally having a boy. For sure. Yep.

Rachel, you may have a baby belly, but the rest of you is still so tiny!

I hope you're feeling well! Best wishes for a safe and speedy delivery and recovery.

  9. Heather Raven says:

I could put all my kids in your car to listen, then I could take a NAP!!! Anyway, the question I have about your picture (other than you look marvelous, as always) is – Is that dresser in the background really taller than you. Because if it is, then I need to come over and look at it. Seriously, my eyes went to that first and not your tummy. Praying for you in these last weeks.

  10. Tanya says:

Just heard about your book and eager to get it! I have 2 boys – I think more would put me over the edge. LOL

I know what you mean about digging until the grass is gone – what IS that all about? Boys!

    Tanya :)

  11. Amanda M. says:

    You look absolutely FABULOUS, Rachel!

  12. Rachel says:

    Thanks everybody for the enouragement!

Heather, yes the dresser is taller than me. It's quite large. Come see it anytime.
