Go Dawgs!

Dear Friend,

Hi! How are you? I’m good; it’s the end of the summer and I am feeling tired and stretched thin, a little overheated (but not too bad, there was a nice breeze today). Also, I’m counting down the days to school. I love the boys and I will miss them but my goodness I love how our days flow when we have a schedule. I think I already wrote about this the other day; am I obsessing?

[This is the section of the letter where I would wax eloquent about the great summer it's been and how I have mixed feelings about sending them off to school but while the first is totally true the second is not at all and I don't have the energy to try and come up with something that makes me sound less mean about sending off the troops. They love school. I love school. Out the door we go!]

Anyway, what I’m really writing to tell you is that I have been chosen to be a part of the Grady (College of Journalism at the University of Georgia) Alumni Authors Showcase! I’m very excited and honored. The big event is Thursday, October 14 at 4 p.m. and if you are in the area I would love to see you there.

As a side note, I found out this thrilling news when we were in Boston Common on our family vacation a few weeks ago. The boys were feeding the ducks and Paul and I were sitting on a bench watching a tiny little European family count the number of boys in the mob (yes, five I wanted to say but I couldn’t remember any Dutch) and then Henry, fresh from one of those depleting naps where the child is in a worse mood then when he passed out, well he got annoyed and yelled at one of the brothers to “Sha-dup!” and then proceeded to try and kick something. He wound up slipping in the muddy banks of the pond, which was totally mortifying and highly inappropriate (which is why, of course, I’m confessing it here to you). After firmly and effectively dealing with this bad behavior (and also collecting my award for Mother of the Year) I checked my email and found out that I had been chosen as part of this showcase for my book How Do You Tuck In A Superhero. While this did not give me a boost mothering-skills wise, I felt better nonetheless.

I close my letter by saying I miss you dearly and I can’t wait until we can connect soon, once things are a bit more quiet around here. I was going to write an explanation about why I think summer gets a little challenging for me, but then I saw that Amy Welborn summed up my feelings perfectly, especially the part about working in a crowded coffee house and how even that is sometimes more relaxing than being at home.

Love to you,

Me

Rachel-I'm with you!! Summer holidays are long and I'm ready for school again! I think my eldest 4 are too even if they haven't fully embraced that fact yet. It'll also give me a wee bit of quiet time with my baby Luke-almost 4 months now-I'm looking forward to that even though there'll be school pickups and after scholl activities etc etc. Seriously don'y know how home schooling mummies so it.
Anyway very well done on the Author Alumni panel thing-what an achievement. Well done, Emma

Congrats on the Alumni panel! That's pretty awesome. You've always impressed me :) Love the story about the plush purse and Elliott knowing about ladies' makeup. Makes me want to quiz my three boys. I think Noah would know the most, having been in several plays and submitting to various layers of "stage makeup". I LOVE the link to Amy Welbourn and will read and reread her comments. I feel so much better about my squandered youth of hours spent lying on my bed reading! Hugs, Lorin
