Hiccup

I have a little informal survey I’d like to conduct here. I have a “friend” who really (really really really) likes ice cream. When Ben and Jerry’s is on sale, she buys that. Her question is: do you think it’s normal to be able to eat an entire container of B+J’s in one sitting? Is this something other people do and if so please publicly admit it here on this blog so our “friend” can feel less weird about her (very very very bad) eating habits.

  1. Kate says:

You mean the little pint containers? Yeah, that sounds normal to me. ;-) If your 'friend' simply considers it a meal in itself, that makes it not quite so bad, IMO. Just don't eat an entire pint for dessert *on top* of a full meal.

Oh, now I want ice cream!!

    Kate

  2. Heather says:

Totally normal. I have a "friend' who has been known to do the same thing. With the stress of this pas week I, I mean my "friend," would devour a whole Ben & Jerry's if there was one in the house.

  3. Joseph R. says:

A co-worker and I went to a supermarket to get something for lunch. We saw B&J on a "buy one, get one free" sale, so we bought dessert too. At work, we didn't have a freezer, so we both had our lunch and a pint of ice cream. Since then, I've downed a pint on a couple of occasions, but those weren't with a meal. Oh, and yes, we weren't very productive at work that afternoon.

  4. Andrea says:

I could totally eat a whole pint in one sitting, but like previous commenterS, skip the meal prior…and then lie on the couch and watch a chick flick. :)

  5. Lauren @ Magnify the Lord with Me says:

Perhaps a Bluebell pint- but those B&J pints are SO DENSE and delicious!!!! I can get 3-4 bowls out of that!!! :)

But NO judgement on those who do…such as your friend. :)

  6. theitaliandyes says:

HaHaHa! I have a feeling your "friend" and my "friend" would get along quite fabulously… as long as each had their own pint!

  7. WheelbarrowRider says:

pretty sure those little things are single serving, lol; at least in my world

  8. Mary Kate says:

oh, heck, yeah! A little tip to lessen the guilt? Find a store that sells the B&J quart-size containers (here it's Trader Joe's that sells them), and then you won't be able to say you can finish the entire container in one sitting! I think…. ;-)

As I often say, mothers of many kids can pick smoking, drinking, gambling, or eating to deal with the stress. Eating sounds pretty tame, right? lol

  9. Amanda M. says:

That skit is an absolute FAVORITE of my husband and mine. :)
And I cannot even believe you asked! OF COURSE it's normal to eat the entire pint!
I am just jealous your "friend" can do that and look so fabulous.

  10. Dan & Katie says:

My husband and I each had our own Ben and Jerry's on our first date in college, which was a long walk to the grocery store, since neither one of us had a car and our college campus was so small that it had nothing. Whenever we get any now, we each have our own, although I have full rights to "taste" his. And I never, ever count ice cream as a meal. It's against my grain – I still want to eat my dinner, too :)

  11. Becca says:

I've absolutely eaten an entire pint before. Especially after my first was born, and I was spending every night from 9pm till 3am sitting up with her. Cinnamon Sticky Bun and Brownie Swirl got me through some dark times. ;) Nowadays, my husband and I share a pint, mostly to keep ourselves in check, because we could both easily eat more than one apiece!

  12. Catholic Mommy to Five..fun from home says:

Studies have shown that there is a definate need for 3000 calories at night…tell her no worries she is just following the latest scientific findings.

  13. The Happy Mother says:

Wait, aren't you SUPPOSED to eat the whole thing at once?

  14. Lynn says:

I think that your "friend" should be fine! Now I would like some Cherry Garcia!

  15. AmyRobynne says:

I like eating lots of ice cream, but find B&J's too dense. I bet I eat a pint, but out of Edy's/Dreyer's 1.5 qt containers of light ice cream.

  16. Gretchen says:

I'm with "The Happy Mother!!" Seriously, a few times a year (usually when my husband goes out of town) I treat myself to a pint. Once I start, I can't stop and yes—I eat it all in one sitting.

  17. Anonymous says:

Burp…a pint of B&J New York Super Chunk for lunch or dinner, yummy!
You too can look like me (yes, chubby):)

  18. :o) mg says:

I have had this conversation so many times. My f-i-l can make a pint of NYSFC last for weeks, having a couple of tablespoons at a time after dinner. Sick-o! LOL
I am pretty sure none of us want to look at the nutritional info label… too depressing.
    Depressed = more ice cream

  19. Laura G says:

Oh, now I want a pint, too! Yes, absolutely necessary to eat the whole thing. Tell your "friend" she's totally normal!

  20. Karen says:

Uuuumhh I confess I just had one tonight! And it was delicious! And I had one alot of nights towards the end of one of my pregnancy! Oh so good! Oh so therapeutic. :)

  21. Becky D. says:

Ben and Jerry's pints are my favorite. I'm New York Super Fudge Chunk. I do technically share with my husband since it is usually a "Would you please go out at midnight and get us some ice cream?" thing but I could eat it alone.

  22. Anonymous says:

In two words, "no problem"! I, too, have a "friend" who could do that quite easily. Audrey from NY

  23. Maryan says:

    Normal. ;)

  24. Kris says:

My "friend" is not a huge fan of ice cream, although her husband could down a pint, no problem. My "friend" is personally a fan of chocolate chip cookie dough, and could eat a bunch of that in one sitting.

  25. Rebekka says:

I could probably eat it myself, but it's expensive here and I usually share a pint with my husband. (Or we eat it over two sittings.)

  26. Ecce Quam Bonam says:

My friend, who does this on a monthly basis, heard from a reliable source that a single-sitting pint of B&J or gelato is essential for maintaining good mental health.

  27. Lana says:

About two or three times a year I get the yearning for Cherry Garcia. As long as I get New York Super Fudge Chunk for dear hubby all is right with the world;~D We think a pint is just the right size for a portion of such goodness, but we eat a little lighter for a day or two after.

  28. Lady Caitie in the Pretty City says:

I don't know about my friends, but I sure do! :) LOL

  29. Molly says:

I'd rather get Schwan's ice cream. Rich chocolate ice cream with huge swirls of peanut butter and peanut butter cups (aka #369) delivered right to your door is especially delicious. Mmm…

  30. the good life mama says:

Oh yeah, totally normal. And good for you in my book, what with the dairy and all. Throw in some cherries and you've almost got yourself a complete meal! :)

  31. Anonymous says:

Completely normal!:-) SO happy that my hubs likes his wife a little on the curvy side.

  32. Sarah says:

Nothing wrong with that!!!! B&J's Phish Food is my drug of choice, although I only indulge about once a year.

  33. Christine C. says:

I think 2-3 servings is a bit more "normal" on a regular basis, while the whole thing is perfectly acceptable every . . . so often. Of course, it depends on what kind of a day your friend has had ;)
B&J is pretty much the only kind of ice cream I will even eat (I know, what's wrong with me?). The 2 I get are the Chocolate with Peanut Butter – haven't found this in any other brand – and Chocolate Fudge Brownie.

  34. JMW says:

Yes, it's normal. We all have our weak moments. And thanks for including one of my all-time favorite SNL skits. I can remember my college roommate and I laughing until we cried over this skit. So funny!

  35. Julie B. says:

Only while I watch The Biggest Loser, Losin' it with Jillian or any other weight loss show. Otherwise I find it completely abnormal. haha

Every once in a while we just need something to enjoy and not feel guilty about whether it is ice cream, chocolate, little debbie's, pop tarts. I am pretty sure we have all had our 'fill' of something good!

  36. Testosterone Mom in MD says:

Your friend sounds like my friend one week every month. For my friend it can only be Chubby Hubby, and the hubby and three teenage sons know NOT to even think about helping themselves to any of it.

  37. Marilyn H says:

I think it's abnormal to eat it over more than one sitting! Although, sometimes I try to fool myself by putting it back in the freezer and then going back a half hour later to finish it off.

  38. LM says:

I'm from Vermont, and it was always considered the norm to eat a pint of Ben and Jerry's. In fact, I remember once attempting to not eat the whole thing, and my friend took it from me and finished it after finishing his. "this won't do." He said :)

  39. The White Clan says:

I don't think they would make it in that size of container if it wasn't supposed to be eaten all at once. I could eat two Phish Food ones in a day, because I love that stinkin stuff!
