Overheard: End of Summer Edition

Boy, highly agitated: OUCH! You have terrible!!! aim!!!!

Other boy, the one holding the Nerf gun: It must be perfect aim because it made you cry.
_______________

So, yes! End of summer. Except not really because we start after Labor Day. We’re close but not. quite. there.

I love my boys, my goodness I do. But it’s time for structure and some leaving-of-the-house and that sort of thing. Of course, the little voice in my head (the one I got about two years into blogging) is reminding me that my readership is filled with those Superhero female types called “Homeschooling Mothers” who won’t be sending their children out the door and always have this houseful and they must be just rolling their eyes at your inability to just deal with it, woman.

Except, I don’t homeschool and there isn’t grace for me to do this. So I’m eyeing that finish line with delight and with a deep sigh. I will enjoy these last few weeks of summer and I will miss the boys when they go back to school. But oh-my-goodness I think that will be really good for everyone, all around.

(Also, Happy Birthday Mom! I love you so! You are the best mom a girl could hope for or even dream of. I really do love you a lot.)

Thank You! I so admire you and enjoy your writing. I too cannot imagine being a Homeschool Mom, although I have nothing but awe and admiration for those that do, it is just not how God made me. Mine go back to school on Sept. 13th, it seems a little too far away in these dwindling days, they are ready and I am ready, and the little guys are ready to have the house and me to themselves again for a little while.

Mine start school on Monday and not only are my husband (who is home with them during the day) and I thrilled they are too. They are looking forward to seeing their school friends and playing on the playground and I am sure they are looking forward to Mass on Wednesday as well as Sunday :)

Wow – you're in GA and you don't go back until after Labor Day? Even all our parochial schools are back here in the ATL. I do homeschool, so I guess I can't talk, but my oldest son just started high school and is back IN school this year. So there you go. But I can relate to the "end of summer" desire, because even with homeschooling, "starting" officially gives our day a structure that we don't have during the summer, so even homeschooling Moms heave a sigh of relief when school starts again in the fall.

  4. Charlene says:

I'm with you…I don't think I have enough grace or – um, patience to homeschool my bunch.

As a mother of 6 (4 of which are boys), I couldn't help but laugh at the terrible/perfect aim comment Haha!

  5. Spesamor Academy says:

I agree with Kris. I homeschool and the lack of structure is driving us all crazy. We have to start school again SOON before they totally destroy the house!

  6. Michelle says:

Home schooling moms most definitely have a special place in heaven!

I'm so tired of the beat down that mom's who send their children to school put themselves through on the internet. I came from a family of educators. I never wanted to be a teacher, even when I was in first grade and all my friends and sisters wanted to be teachers when they grew up. Two of my sisters did become teachers! I wanted to work in an office.

So don't apologize at all for being who you are. There is a special place in heaven for all good moms, whether they homeschool or not!

As a homeschooling mom, I dread the beginning of the school year–trying to get a head start though, so I can get a quarter in before baby number 6 gets here in November. 1 girl and 4 boys–you can guess what the girl is hoping for . . .

  9. Aimee says:

okay, crazy! I was doing a re-read of Crunchy Cons (hadn't read it in 4 years!) and it was SO fun this go-round to recognize your name in there!! Small, small world :)

  10. Gypmar says:

I'm so glad to know that I'm not the only mom who feels just this way!

My Facebook friends are all getting mopey about sending their kids back to school, and I was starting to wonder if there was something wrong with me for counting the days until Sept. 7 :)

  11. Kathryn says:

You all should move to West Central Florida. We went back to school on August 16th, and the rest of our local counties start this week!

(who is VERY HAPPY that school has stared)

I am like you–many, many friends who homeschool and so don't send their children out the door in the fall. I also feel that I am not called to do that, but I also feel a little tinge of something that says maybe I shouldn't rely on school for a routine.

Anyway, I hope your last few weeks are full of fun and anticipation of a successful school year for everyone!
